    “Drunken Life Dreaming Death” is the fourth performance of Song’s company. It is visually poetic theatre; the semi-biographic aspect in the piece translate to universal themes, The performance is devised using; daily life images; movement; gestural images; and interoersonal conflicts to a soundtrack of international music, unfold like a dream, comic, erotic, and disturbing as its rather bemused hero confronts the inhabitants of the subconscious.

    The Ministry of Education in Taiwan has recently announced the list of outstanding young men and women who after passing the competitive national examinations have been awarded government scholarships to study abroad.........

  • Taipei Educational and Cultural Grant 2003 link  
    This grant has been established by the Taipei Educational and Cultural Centre (TECC) in order to support projects related to Taiwan that are initiated by UK higher educational or cultural institutions. The main aim of this grant is to promote and strengthen ties between Taiwan and the UK. The closing date for applications is 31st October 2003. Late applications may be considered subject to funding availability.

    IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES focuses on three contemporary artists who make use of familiar objects, images and samples from everyday life to disconcert the viewer, and question the relational quality of meaning. Through their individual practices, and using disparate media they explore the Unheimlich (Unhomely) and they way it penetrates the everyday.  Jenny Lu, for example, uses video to examine suicide in a clinical and emotionally distant manner, while Miranda Lopatkin creates haunting images that combine the domestic with a ghostly human presence..........

  • London Taiwan Seminar  (June-August 2003) link
    This series of seminars is designed to critically engage with aspects of Western social theory in light of contemporary debates in Taiwanese Studies. They are structured in terms of ten two-hour sessions, with each session devoted to a particular topic. The first hour of each workshop will follow a lecture format, while the second hour will involve a critical reading of a selected text about Taiwan. The workshops will be conducted in English, but we would like to welcome as many nationalities as possible. Although our primary focus is on Taiwan, we also welcome any comparative study with Taiwan. The workshops will take place at the School of Oriental and African Studies, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG. The seminars are sponsored by the Taipei Educational and Cultural Centre.

    Gods and monsters that inhabit ephemeral, fictitious or utopian realms are featured in Yao Jui Chung’s photographic installations. The artist examines the human plight and explores our need to immerse ourselves in a world of illusion in order to escape the helplessness of real life.........
    Yao Jui Chung is a Taiwanese artist, critic and curator with an international reputation. He represented Taiwan at the Venice Biennale in 1997 and has exhibited extensively in Asia, Australia, Europe and North America.

    Since 10 April, Taiwan CDC has asked each international passenger should be taken temperature on arrival to strengthen the international airports quarantine to prevent more importation of probable SARS cases from abroad. On April 11, a total number of 5 passengers in the CKS international airport and 1 passenger in the Kaohsiung international airport had fever symptom. They were allowed to go home after receiving medical services. ..........and more.......

  • Performance: The Sound of Ocean by U Theatre  link  
    100 minutes of 100 per cent aural and visual pleasure. The Sound of Ocean is a mesmerising display of rhythm and movement, drawing on ancient Taiwanese arts and contemporary theatre techniques.
    U Theatre was established in 1988, a performance ensemble dedicated to keeping alive the traditional arts of Taiwan.

  • Exhibition: Hsiao-Mei Lin’s New Paintings  link
    Hsiao-Mei was the first Taiwanese student to graduate from the Royal Academy .  She won the 1996 David Murray Travel Award, and then the Cyrill Sweett award for the most outstanding MA graduate from the Royal Academy , the Slade, and the Royal College of Art. Hsiao-Mei Lin’s subtle and atmospheric oils on gesso have an intriguing sense of mystery that hints at dreamlike worlds and secret places........

    Born in Taiwan and has lived in Britain since 1997, Sean WU is described as one of Taiwan ’s "new generation" poets and artists. Following his Writing the Dancing and Bodily Perspectives, WU's latest publication is A Meteor Singing. This poetry and "poetry installation" collection features around 60 Chinese and English poems written by WU in the last 14 years.
