  • Exhibition: Lingchi - Echoes of a Historical Photograph (2002) by the Taiwanese artist Chen Chieh-Jen (24 June to 14 August 2005) link
FACT is planning to exhibit Lingchi - Echoes of a Historical Photograph (2002) by the Taiwanese artist Chen Chieh-Jen in Gallery 1 at FACT as part of The Agony and The Ecstasy exhibition. These works are significant for exhibition in the current political climate, particularly in light of the crimes against humanity conducted during and post Iraq; the work provokes questions around how we relate to, consume and process aesthetics of horror, images of sublime human suffering (and whether this offers clues to redemption). The black and white film Lingchi transfixes the viewer, both through the seductive quality of the film and its meditation on the relationship between image and power, horror, ecstasy and religion. The award-winning and renowned Taiwanese artist's work was part of the Vancouver International Film Festival (2004) and this year Chen chieh-Jen is featured at the Venice Biennale.
