Some Tips on Recruiting Students from Taiwan to Study at Your College or University

1. U.K. educational fairs are regularly held in Taiwan. British universities and colleges are encouraged to participate in these fairs provided that the activities are hosted by government or quasi-government agencies, or private consultant agencies registered with the Ministry of Education in Taiwan. Please avoid entrusting any unregistered institutes or individuals to assist you in your recruitment efforts.

2. We suggest that if you send a representative to Taiwan, the representative be from one of your faculties or from your administration rather than from a private company.

3. Some libraries in Taiwan (see Study Abroad Information Centres) are assigned by the Ministry of Education to provide information and counselling services relating to the pursuit of studies abroad. They will greatly appreciate receiving university/college calendars and other materials on a regular basis; it will help them tremendously if you could include them on your mailing list. In addition, you are welcome to visit any of these libraries when you visit Taiwan.

4. Many parents and students in Taiwan are interested in post-secondary educational opportunities abroad that lead to a university degree or programmes to prepare students for university education. The government does not encourage parents to send their young children to receive secondary or elementary education abroad unless it aims to promote international educational exchange, and arrangements for safety and guardianship are made with care by the exchange parties.

5. The Ministry of Education advises institutions not to run degree programmes in co-operation with unrecognised institutions in Taiwan such as private crammer schools or colleges run by commercial organisations.

6. Although the Ministry of Education allows UK educational institutions to co-operate with universities and colleges in Taiwan to offer distance learning programmes, credits earned from these programmes should constitute no more than one third of the credits required for the degree.

7. The following programmes offered by any foreign educational institutions are not recognised by our Ministry of Education in Taipei:

a. Credits or diplomas earned from correspondence education, or any programmes which do not teach the regular curriculum.
b. Credits or diplomas conferred by a foreign university/college that offer courses in Taiwan.
c. Master's degree programmes offered by foreign universities to students from Taiwan, which do not include at least two semesters or three terms study in the foreign university.
d. Intensive programmes offered abroad only during the summer and winter periods
e. Any other programmes which are not compatible with the education system in Taiwan.

8. The educational institutions in Taiwan welcome representatives of any foreign university/college to visit them and exchange ideas for co-operation in education. However, our educational institutions are unable to arrange any visit that is exclusively for recruitment purposes. The Taipei Representative Office will not help you to arrange a recruitment itinerary.

9. According to our regulations on compulsory military service, male students who are above sixteen years of age and have not yet completed their military obligations can go abroad for study only in certain circumstances. Your recruitment policy should take this into account.

10. The Ministry of Education in Taipei helps our student associations from different
universities and colleges to hold workshops in Taiwan during the summer. In those workshops, our students in Taiwan may obtain information from the student representatives. You may ask the student associations in your university or college to contact us for help in holding a workshop.

11. Newsletters published by the Ministry of Education welcome short articles
(no longer than 1000 words in length) introducing your university/college. We prefer that the article (instead of providing only general information) tell us about the best departments, its renowned professors, the size of its research facilities, and other significant accomplishments in the academic fields. Although the newsletters are in Chinese, you may write your article in English; my office is able to translate your article if it is adopted.
