The National Science Council's Support to Research

Research Projects

The National Science Council (NSC) provides financial assistance to academic research organisations and to universities to carry out academic research projects. A variety of expenses are paid for based on actual need, such as research assistants, instruments and facilities, consumable goods, calculators and administrative and other research-related expenditures. The "research projects" are divided into two categories:

a. Individualised projects

Researchers may propose research topics based on either current domestic sci-tech development requirements or on personal interest.

b. Mission-oriented projects

The NSC has established a task force to co-ordinate with all relevant bodies in drawing up and approving research topics directed towards industrial development, public welfare, or other current national needs.

International Co-operation

Bilateral Sci-tech Co-operation

The National Science Council has acted on behalf of the government in signing bilateral agreements on science and technology co-operation with the United States, Japan, South Africa, France, Germany, England, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Jordan, Russia, and Australia.

International Sci-tech Organisations and Activities

The NSC has full membership in 27 of the 21 science organisations of International Council of Scientific Unions. It is an official member of the International Foundation for Science and actively assists developing nations in developing science and technology. It also provides financial assistance to hold international academic conferences, and to help academics participate in international conferences. In addition, internationally renowned scholars are invited, under NSC's support, to Taiwan to present lectures.
