Hsiao-Mei Lin’s subtle and atmospheric oils on gesso have an intriguing sense of mystery that hints at dreamlike worlds and secret places. She says of her landscapes, ‘I find inspiration for my paintings in the spaces between the imaginary and natural worlds. Remembered landscapes and the emotions they evoke, colours, shapes and atmosphere all form in my mind as I work. I can’t say that any one thing or event plays a part in this process, the work itself takes control with a seeming life of its own. I become a mere instrument of its creation, thankful to call it my own.’

Her oil paintings develop from a rich and creative fusion – eastern influences combine with influences from the British landscape painting tradition. The rich tonal qualities of the layered paint surfaces heighten the atmospheric and ethereal qualities of the images.

Hsiao-Mei was the first Taiwanese student to graduate from the Royal Academy .  She won the 1996 David Murray Travel Award, and then the Cyrill Sweett award for the most outstanding MA graduate from the Royal Academy , the Slade, and the Royal College of Art.
